Saviya Lopes

Saviya Lopes (b. 1994) is a visual artist from Vasai (Bassein), India, reclaiming local and personal histories through an unapologetically feminist lens. Her work confronts the erasure of women’s intellectual and emotional labour, exposing the weight of gendered, caste, patriarchal, and colonial oppressions. Drawing from family archives, oral traditions, and feminist texts worldwide, she insists on remembering women in their complexity – beyond struggle, in their resilience, joy, and power. Her works center care, leisure, and sustenance as radical, essential forms of resistance, demanding that women’s political lives be recognized in their fullness: not only survival, but defiance and pleasure.

Lopes has showcased her work in numerous group exhibitions worldwide since 2015. Key exhibitions include Dakar Biennale (2016); The Showroom, London (2018); Ireland Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2016); Foundation Fiminco, Paris (2021), and a co-curator for Kochi Students Biennale 2022-23. She was the recipient of Inlaks – UNIDEE Award for International Artists’ Residency at Fondazione Pistoletto – Cittadellarte, Italy (2024) and is currently on the advisory board of the Kaka Baptista East Indian Museum, Mumbai.
