What remains after an image is fractured, a monument falls, a home disappears, or an object is separated from its original context? What continues to persist when histories are rewritten, inherited, forgotten, or transformed?

Upon Us After brings together the works of Amra Khan, Naira Mushtaq, and Sehr Jalil in an exhibition that considers the lives of objects beyond their immediate function or origin. Inspired by the notion of the “object of translation,” the exhibition examines how monuments, archival fragments, domestic artefacts, devotional objects, images, and inherited belongings become vessels through which histories travel across time, place, and memory.

Rather than presenting history as fixed or singular, the exhibition approaches it as a process of continual translation. As objects move between generations, geographies, and systems of power, they accumulate new meanings and shed old ones. They become witnesses to personal and collective histories, carrying traces of what has been lost, remembered, altered, or erased. In this sense, translation is not merely linguistic; it is material, cultural, and political.

Across the exhibition, material culture emerges as a form of memory keeping. Objects, images, and spaces are not treated as static remnants of the past, but as active carriers of stories that continue to be reinterpreted through time. Monuments are stripped of certainty, archives reveal gaps as much as they preserve knowledge, and domestic artefacts become repositories of lived experience, inheritance, and belonging.

Amra Khan draws on devotional artefacts, textiles, repurposed materials, and the visual language of altars to explore how belief, desire, identity, and history become embedded within material culture. Naira Mushtaq engages with archives of political imagery, cinema, and monuments, inhabiting moments of aftermath that reveal the instability of official narratives and the ways images shape collective memory. Sehr Jalil turns to familial archives, domestic spaces, and inherited histories, examining memory as a living structure reconstructed through acts of care, recollection, and storytelling. Within her practice, the ancestral home emerges not simply as a physical place, but as a shifting repository of memory carried through people, objects, and atmospheres.

Together, these practices move between the monumental and the intimate, the public and the personal, tracing how meaning is produced, preserved, and transformed. Upon Us After inhabits a space of aftermath, reflecting on what survives in the wake of change and how histories continue to unfold through the material traces that remain.
