The Schoo Collection: Jangarh Singh Shyam and Sanjeev Sinha

The Schoo Collection

6 – 10 November 2026 | A sale of original artworks by Jangarh Singh Shyam and Sanjeev Sinha.

South Asian Contemporary Art Amsterdam presents a selection of works by Jangarh Singh Shyam and Sanjeev Sinha, for sale at the gallery. These works are currently held in the Schoo Collection in the Netherlands. They were purchased by the collector directly from the artists and have remained in the collector’s private collection since then.

Given the exceptional recent auction performance of Jangarh Singh Shyam’s work, this sale is a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire works by the artist in Amsterdam. We offer a selection of Shyam’s signed and dated pen-and-ink works on paper. Alongside these are selected works by Sanjeev Sinha – a trailblazer of India’s contemporary art scene of the 1980s and 1990s – in oil and acrylic on canvas and paper.

Jangarh Singh Shyam

Jangarh Singh Shyam (1962-2001) belonged to the Pardhan community in Madhya Pradesh. His practice developed from wall drawing to paper and canvas, becoming known as Jangarh Kalam: a visual language of intricate dots, dashes, and recurring forms of animals, plants, and birds. His work is held in international museum collections, including the Guggenheim in New York, the Chicago Cultural Centre and KNMA.

Sanjeev Sinha

Sanjeev Sinha (1963-2020) played a prominent role in the young Bihari art generation of the 1980s and was the first artist of his generation to win the National Academy Award in 1991. Painting and sculpting from the 1980s onwards, he developed a distinctive visual language shaped by Hindu and Buddhist narrative, with faces, bodies, animals and abstract forms rendered boldly in colour and, at times, gold paint.

Jangarh Singh Shyam and Sanjeev Sinha were exemplary Indian contemporary artists with distinct aesthetics. Their work is brought together here for the first time, offering European and international collectors and audiences an opportunity to encounter exceptional works that have been privately held.
